We
are caged-birds, aren’t we?
When
we see a caged bird, what on our mind is a bird with a beautiful chirp,
beautiful fur, and high-prices. It generally represents beauty. However, when
we see a caged- bird in different perception in the context of our social life.
It can represent a poor society in which always being restrained. A bird that
can see the beauty of nature but they cannot do anything. They just fly from side
to side in a cage. As we live right now, we can see others with their
prosperity, while we are still in poverty. It is similar with what happened in Protes by Putu Wijaya, “Burung hidup
dalam sangkar, kita hidup dalam tembok.” We cannot live as that bad. A cage is
like a big wall. We have to destroy all of those walls in order to build a
beautiful castle instead. We have to open our eyes that we can also get our
prosperity.
An
opened-eye can drive us into a real freedom. As we have had our independence,
69 years ago but we have not got the essence of that independence. We are still
far from freedom; freedom of stupidity and freedom of poverty. Buy opening our eyes;
we can reach our real freedom, real happiness. It can be done if we as society
unite with the ruler to break that limitation.
At last,
every element, the ruler and the society have to have a similar perception
about the concept of a caged-bird in which represents a real beauty.
